The exam 70-217 is focused on administering and implementing the Windows 2000 directory infrastructure of Microsoft. The exam measures the examinee’s ability to troubleshoot, configure and install the Window 2000 active directory and its components, DNS for active directory and security solutions for the active directory. As well as the examinee’s skill in managing, monitoring and optimizing the desktop environment with the use of Group Policy.

The exam is composed of 46 questions and is given a time limit of 110 minutes. The passing score for the exam is 665/1000. The passer of the exam will be given a certification for MCSE and MCSA for the Windows 2000 operating platform. MCSE is Microsoft Certified System Engineer while MCSA is Microsoft Certified System Administrator. The passer of the exam will also have the status of Microsoft Certified Professional. The exam is for anyone although, Microsoft suggests that the candidates must have knowledge in working with medium and large computing environments. Microsoft also suggests that the examinee should have at least one year of experience in the administration and implementation of operating system of the network.
Coverage of the exam
The exam covers installation and configuration of the active directory. This will involve the installation of domains, forest and trees. Another part of the exam is on monitoring, configuring, installing, managing and troubleshooting DNS for the Active directory. There is also a part on optimizing, configuring, monitoring, managing and troubleshooting configuration and change management. This part involves the implementation and troubleshooting of group policy. The exam 70-217 also covers managing, optimizing and monitoring of the components of active directory. In this section of the exam, there will management of active directory objects, restoration and back up of active directory. Restore and back up of active directory involves seizing operation master roles and recovering from system failures. It may also include performing non-authority and authority restore of the active directory. The last section of the exam is managing, configuring, troubleshooting and monitoring security in the infrastructure of directory services. This involves the application of security policy with the use of the group policy and implementation of the audit policy. It will also tackle monitoring and analysis of security events. The examinee may be asked to create, modify and analyze the configuration of the system with the use of security configuration and the analysis snap-in along with the security templates snap-in.
